Our Grades 7, 8, and 9 educational tour to Kisumu was a resounding success!
The tour aimed to provide learners with experiential learning opportunities, enhance their understanding of Social Studies and Integrated Science, and expose them to Kenya’s rich cultural and ecological diversity.
It did exactly that and then some.
Day 1 (29th July) of the tour saw them visit Kit Mikayi, Kisumu Port, and Impala Sanctuary, while on Day 2(30th July), they visited Kisumu Museum and Kisumu International Airport.
They learned about the legend behind Kit Mikayi (Stone of the First Wife) and its spiritual significance to the local community, and explored the rock formations as they engaged with local guides who narrated cultural stories and answered their questions. This had them appreciating Kenya’s cultural heritage, oral traditions, and geography even more.
A guided tour of Kisumu Port offered them insights into transportation and trade activities on Lake Victoria. They saw cargo handling, ferries, and other maritime activities. Lengthy discussions on the historical and economic importance of the port to the East African region carried the afternoon. This visit reinforced topics on transport and trade within East Africa and the Blue Economy.
The park provided an up-close look at various wild animals, including lions, zebras, tortoises, hyenas, and leopards. The role of conservation and environmental education was emphasized, and their understanding of wildlife conservation, biodiversity, and ecological balance was boosted.
The museum visit started with a tour through exhibits showcasing traditional Luo homesteads, local fauna, historical artifacts, and traditional crafts. They also explored the aquarium section with its display of freshwater fish found in Lake Victoria. Museum educators engaged our learners in discussions around Luo traditions, colonial history, and natural heritage, integrating learning across history, science, and cultural studies.
The guided tour of the airport facilities included visits to the terminal area and observation of air traffic operations. They learned about airport management, air travel procedures, and careers in the aviation industry. This particular visit was met with quite the excitement, and it strengthened the learners’ understanding of air transport, communication technology, and global connectivity.
It has indeed been an amazing two days in Kisumu!
